About Me
Frontend Developer at Squarespace who loves travel, skiing, hiking, Vermont, and his dogs.
I'm a Frontend Developer at Squarespace, working primarily on the main public site. I work with a hugely talented and passionate team of developers and designers, focusing on the marketing of the Squarespace brand. We're using the Squarespace Developer Platform to push the boundaries of what's possible for our site. Using the tools that are available to our customers, we're inventing what's possible for a beautiful experience on the web.
Recently I built and launched the redesign of the Squarespace official blog, working closely with the incredibly talented designer Billy Sweeney. This blog was my first experience building a Squarespace template from scratch, which was an exhilarating process. I learned so much, and sweated every detail of this fully responsive site. I can't wait until it becomes a consumer template!
Inspired by book layouts, a bold image, headline and meta information appears on the left, with the content scrolling on the right.
The index of articles takes its cue from a table of contents, causing the current article to slide to the right to reveal a list.
Previously I was a Media Production Manager (made ad related things), an Interactive Development Manager (made cooler, interactive things), the Director of Interactive Media Services (still made cool things, helped others make those cool things, too), the Senior Director of Professional Services (managing a bunch of people and clients, didn't get to make anything any more), and the Director of Frontend Software Engineering (more cool things again, but now mobile and responsive), all for a company called WorldNow. i was there for ten years, and I'm glossing over a few of the in-between bits, but that's a lot in a very long time. I miss some of the truly great people there.
For the past few years I've taught a class at NYC's School of Visual Arts with the phenomenally talented Andy Pratt. The course focuses on helping MFA design students to think about interactive design as a business, to help them understand and experience some of what their careers may be in the future. While Mr. Pratt dealt with the enormous task of helping the students develop concepts, explore the competitive landscape, recognize their challenges, and ultimately realize their ideas -- at least in a fully developed presentation, my job was to focus on the fundamentals of the web. I taught them HTML and CSS, showed them how information is architected on the web and how interactivity can lead to an engaging experience for their audience, enhancing their ideas and concepts. I've met some of the future of the web in these classes, and I'm excited by what they're going to achieve.

In March of 2012, we went on our first international ski trip to the gorgeous Tyrol region of Austria. The top runs of the mountain were frigid at about 9,000 feet with hard packed snow, softening to spring-like conditions at the 4,200 foot base. By skiing top to bottom you can practically experience an entire winter's worth of conditions!
